Short answer
An Indian MSME should start with AI where work is repetitive and text-heavy, not with a big software project. The usual first wins are quotations and proposals, customer replies on WhatsApp and email, SOPs and documentation, daily and monthly reporting, and marketing content. Start with the owner learning to use generative AI tools well, then pick one workflow, standardise it with AI, measure the time saved, and only then automate it end to end. Most MSMEs do not need custom AI software at the start; they need a clear process, the right off-the-shelf tools, and people trained to use them.

Where AI fits first in a small business
Look for work that is repeated every day or week and mostly involves reading, writing or summarising.
- Quotations, proposals and follow-up messages
- Customer enquiries on WhatsApp, email and calls
- SOPs, checklists and training material for staff
- Sales, stock and accounts reporting
- Marketing posts, catalogues and product descriptions
A simple four-step start
This is the sequence we use when mentoring business owners.
- Learn — the owner and one or two key people learn practical generative AI
- Pick one workflow — choose a single repetitive process with a clear owner
- Standardise — write the process down and use AI to do it the same way every time
- Automate and measure — connect the tools, then track time saved and errors avoided
Common mistakes to avoid
Buying expensive custom software before the process is clear, automating a broken process, giving staff tools without training, and putting sensitive customer or financial data into tools without checking how that data is handled.
